What makes a good precision agriculture program?
When developing a precision agriculture program for a farm there a a few questions that should be asked:
1. What drives variability on the farm?
- The answer to this question will vary by farm, and therefore the program created should be as unique.
2. Do you have the resources to manage a precision agriculture program on the farm?
- There is a cost to implementing a precision ag program, whether it is monetary, human capital or time. Are you prepared to invest all three?
3. What goal(s) are you trying to achieve in implementing a precision agriculture program on your farm?
- One of the most important questions is defining what your objectives are i.e. increased yield, increased profitability, understanding yield variability/soil variability
4. Do you have accurate and reliable data to develop program?
- Having years of reliable and accurate data is important for making informed decisions.
